Far away in Thailand's northwestern most province of Mae Hong Son and deep within its misty mountains, lies a cute little town called “Pai.” It is a place where diverse people, be it low-land locals or hill tribes, live peace-fully and harmoniously together. For this trip a somewhat bigger displacement motorcycle is advisable, 250cc or up will do fine. From Chiang Mai, take Mae Rim – Mae Malai Highway. Turn left to route 1095 from Mae Malai. Pai is another 100km away. Because the road is extremely steep and curvy, the ride will take roughly four hours. If you travel during the rainy season like us, it is highly recommended that you check the road condition ahead of time as it often gets cut off by heavy rain during the monsoon season.
The trip can be extra challenging if you are afraid of heights, or if you easily of balance by doing multiple curvy corners and bumpy roads.
The whole region is famous for the abundant greenery, simple living, cultural richness and outdoor activities. This makes Pai one of the most favorite destinations in many hearts.
Pai is a small district in Mae Hong Son that is surrounded by mountains, rice fields, garlic and soy bean plantations and the Pai River. Situated 600 meters above sea level, visiting Pai means you either see mist of fog throughout the year so make sure that your motorcycle lights work perfect.Unlike the past, Pai is now accessible via pave roads, albeit some very adventurous and twisting ones. As you approach this tiny heavenly town, Pai welcomes visitors with unique street winding around beautiful teak-wood houses and local shops. Riding slowly through the main street in Pai is a must. While such a ride in an early morning gives a glimpse of the locals and hill tribe people's simple way of life as they shop for items at the fresh market, doing the same ride at night is a total different experience. Several artists, be it Thai or foreigners, usually take this time to showcase their paintings or perform live music roadside.
Riding your motorcycle through downtown and further outside the city streets is another pleasure not to be missed. The cool wind during the ride is truly refreshing while pictureque sceneries of growing rice field, with the background of dark green misty mountains and the crystal clear River Pai are genuinely breathtaking.
