The MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR - Utterly Mental Bike

The BikesBeautiful, hard, super fast and good fuel economics – that's the best way I can describe the MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR.

Even at standstill the MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR looks menacing. Power is sharp and snappy and it comes on with an incredible rush at 6,000rpm. You only have to look at the dyno sheet. Between 5,500rpm and 7,000rpm the MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR gets a 25Nm jump in torque that sees the front wheel going up in all first three gears.

It's in this enviroment that the MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR excels – the faster you go the better it feels. The throttle has a heavy application and when just cruising from A to B the fueling could be better. It's not uncommon to get a surge under constant throttle and more than once the MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR would cut out when the clutch was pulled at the traffic light.

The stiffy set up 50mm Marzocchi forks and Sachs rear shock remain quite composed over rough roads but understeer became a bit of an issue when really hard on the power – a bit of set-up time would probably cure this. Braking stability is excellent and feel from the Brembo radial-mount Monobloc calipers is excellent, although the lever comes back a little too much before real power reaches the pads.

Riding comfort is something of a mixed reaction. Some like the forward slanting position but taller riders felt too much onto the front end under braking. But one thing I'm sure everybody can agree on is vibration from the engine is excessive, making the mirrors totally useless – they were too short anyway.

Another issue became apparent. When riding on the balls of my feet, my right foot would slip off the pegs due to the angle of the mufflers – a case of beauty over function.

The dash has an easy-to-read analogue rev counter and digital tacho but it's fussy in its operation. It's aways a pleasure snapping that throttle at idle and watching the rev needle run from one side of the dash to the other.

The MV Agusta Brutale 1078 RR is the motorcycle I'd imagine Mad Max would have loved to tour the country on. IT's insanely fast, has increadibly sharp steering without being unstable and bucket loads of attitude that's hard for any other comparable motorcycle to match.
